Escape from the beaten hiking routes along the Traversata Carnica, also known as the 'Via della Pace', in the remote Alpine areas of Sudtirol, Comelico and Carnia, close to the Austrian-Italian border. Here, evidence of the Great War is abundant, with trenches, barracks and remains of fortifications dotting the landscape. The entire itinerary, stretching some 180 kilometres along the mountain ridge of the Carnic Alps, requires solid physical preparation, considering the long distances to be covered. Our route focuses on the stretch from Forni Avoltri to Timau, crossing some of the area's most emblematic peaks, such as Mounts Volaia and Coglians. Our excursion will be of short duration and accessible to moderately trained hikers, offering the opportunity to immerse oneself in the beauty of the Traversata Carnica. We will walk through wide valleys, admiring the picturesque alpine lakes of Bordaglia and Volaia, the flower-filled high mountain pastures and lush fir and larch forests. We will find ourselves immersed in a wild landscape, often following the Carnic ridge closely and enjoying magnificent views on both sides.
