Snowshoeing on the plateau: from Casera Razzo to Casera Chiansaveit

The Razzo plateau is undoubtedly an iconic location for winter activities. The proposed itinerary involves reaching the picturesque plateau where the Chiansaveit dairy farm stands, crossing gentle ups and downs that offer breathtaking alpine views. Brentoni, Tinisa and Bivera stand as stern guardians of these lands, their harshness contrasting with the gentle pastures covered by a blanket of snow crossed by hikers. Towards Chiansaveit, you are greeted by a charming grove of larch trees still enveloped in winter. These trees, despite their coniferous nature, lose their needles during the winter season. Snowshoeing is therefore an extraordinary opportunity to immerse yourself in spectacular views and fairytale landscapes, in a relatively uncrowded area suspended a stone's throw from the sky.

Midweek snowshoe hike in the snow-covered woods of Val Saisera and Sella Sompdogna

Let's take advantage of the extra 24 hours offered by the leap year with an evocative snowshoe hike! Choosing Thursday will allow us to fully appreciate the beauty of Val Saisera and the climb to Sella Sompdogna, far from the crowds that usually characterise the valley at weekends. The proposed itinerary extends beyond the classic snowshoe route, including the climb to the Fratelli Grego refuge. We will continue through the picturesque forest of beech, spruce and fir trees that separates the building from the picturesque Sompdogna lake, a treasure trove of biological uniqueness. The clearing where the lake is located allows us to admire the clear sky of the Julian Alps above us, previously hidden by the needles of the conifers. Next, we will head towards the Sella, reaching an idyllic plateau covered in white snow and dotted with larch trees, bare and waiting for lush leaves during the warm season. A forest track will take us back to the refuge, from where we will descend along the path we took on the way up towards the valley.

Snowshoeing to the Marinelli Refuge, between snow and the summit of Mount Coglians

The winter snowshoe hike reaches its most evocative point in front of the majestic highest mountain in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Monte Cogliàns (2,780 metres). The setting is extraordinary; immersed in one of the most iconic corners of the region, you cross slopes, woods and white valleys that rise towards the Marinelli refuge, lapped by the Moraretto stream. The spectacle that unfolds from the picturesque plateau on which the refuge is located is absolutely priceless. A wonderful panoramic view stretches to the horizon, with the majestic scenery of Carnia unfolding all around, except to the north, where the imposing mass of Cogliàns embraces the ridge, seeming to watch over those who venture into these places. The route itself does not present any particular technical difficulties, but requires adequate training given the considerable difference in altitude to be tackled with snowshoes. If snow conditions allow, a variation of the route may be considered, leaving the forest track that leads to the refuge. The guide reserves the right to select the most suitable itinerary based on the conditions at the time.

Sunsets over the snow-covered Julian Alps: snowshoeing on the Montasio plateau from Sella Nevea

The Montasio plateau is a magical place in every season, but the wonder it offers at sunset and at nightfall during winter is unparalleled. With this snowshoe hike, we will discover all the charm of this place that seems suspended between the Julian Alps, a stone's throw from the sky. Beautiful fir woods will accompany us on our way to the plateau, while the snow crunches under our snowshoes, until we reach the plateau itself, where the majestic Julian Alps frame this splendid place, appearing almost like a painting all around us. Here we can admire the explosion of colours at sunset; in ideal weather conditions, you can even see the distant Dolomites contrasting with the fiery red of dusk. As night falls, the stars in the January sky will seem so low and bright that you will feel you can touch them. In this mystical atmosphere, we will descend towards Sella Nevea by the light of our head torches, surrounded by the silence and charm of the snowy night.

Snowshoe hike at sunset to Fort Miaron with views of the Dolomites

Snowshoeing in the splendid setting of the Friulian Dolomites to discover the fort on Mount Miaron. The structure, dating back to the 1910s, offers not only historical interest but also a superb view of the upper Tagliamento valley. It is reached via a forest road immersed in woods which, in January, offer a magical and dreamlike atmosphere, making the climb to the fort an unmissable gem for lovers of snowshoeing. To enrich the experience, we will visit the shelter on the opposite side of the fort, which offers an unparalleled view of Cadore. From this exceptional panoramic balcony, we will admire a sunset that will leave everyone speechless, with an exceptional view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. A stunning vantage point from which to admire the “pink mountains” at their most beautiful. The return journey will be along the same route used for the ascent, by the light of head torches.

Snowshoeing at the Monte Ferro refuge in Sappada: terrace overlooking the Pesarine Dolomites

Snowshoe hike starting from the ski resort of Sappada towards the characteristic Monte Ferro mountain hut, a place of worship for skiers until about 30 years ago, when the closure of the slopes on this side of the valley led to its abandonment. Today, the building has been carefully renovated and offers authentic hospitality and breathtaking views of the Pesarine Dolomites, a rocky jewel that encloses this beautiful valley. Along the route, huts and barns dot the landscape, accompanying the crunch of snow under your snowshoes, creating an idyllic winter scene.
