The Grotta Gigante, located in the Trieste Karst, is one of the most impressive and evocative natural cavities in the world. Its visit offers an exciting and unique experience with a guided tour of 850 metres. The tour begins with a descent of 500 steps down safe ramps, leading to the majestic large cavern, 80 metres below the surface. During the tour, the guide will explain the limestone formations and history of the cave, answering all questions and curiosities. Once at the bottom, you will ascend along an exciting path. The tour culminates at a vantage point, with a view of the large cave at a height of 95 metres, followed by the natural exit near the car park. The route is made safe by solid railings and non-slip covering and is suitable for all ages.

Programme

Meet 15 minutes before the start of the visit at the visitor centre and check the booking and purchase of tickets
Departure with the guide from the waiting room at the appointed time
Entrance and descent to the bottom of the cave at 100 m
Various stops with guide explanations along the way
Observation of the main speleothem
Ascent (500 steps), with panoramic view
Exit near the car park
Possible free visit to the Scientific Caving Museum

Requirements

Due to the steps, the route is not accessible to persons with mobility impairments
Safe route with 500 steps down and 500 steps back up
Safe route suitable for all, equipped with handrails and non-slip step covers
Clothing: comfortable shoes and a sweatshirt during the summer (constant 11 degrees all year round)
We recommend baby carriers or backpacks for carrying babies during the visit
Photographs are also permitted with flash except for the first part of the route
Dogs are only allowed inside a special carrier
We recommend booking at least 2 days before the visit to find availability
Schedules are subject to change and changes may be communicated upon booking
For groups of more than 10 persons, please contact us in advance to check availability
