Discover the hidden jewel of the Natisone Valleys. From the car park of the cave, in the locality of Antro, an evocative path leads you up the steps to the cave, located 348 metres above sea level. Tackling the 86 steps, you begin a mesmerising journey through history and nature. The Grotto-Church of San Giovanni d'Antro is an "abyss of myths" and a treasure trove of art: the "loggetta longobarda", the Baroque altar, the magnificent late-Gothic rupestrian church, with passages of frescoes that recall mysterious presences from the Celts to the Templars. The cave, with its extraordinary stratification of history, art and mythology, offers a unique experience. The duration of the visit is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, of which the first 45 minutes are dedicated to the guided tour of the cave along the nature trail (approx. 300m) and 30 minutes of audio-guide for the independent visit of the interior and exterior of the church.

Requirements

We recommend that you bring earphones and download the audio guide app for the church part to your mobile phone before arriving at the venue
We recommend arriving at the car park 30 minutes before the start of the visit
The cave is reached from the car park via an easy path about 500 metres long (5 minutes) and a staircase with 86 stone steps
Although it is level and without any technical difficulties, the tour takes place on largely natural, wet and partly slippery terrain, touching pools of water and forcing one to stoop in the narrowest passages.
Access is not recommended for people with walking difficulties, mobility problems or claustrophobia
Access to the cave with very small children is not recommended, as the floor is slippery
Children should be as independent and safe as possible when moving around and should also be equipped with protective helmets, which will be tested at the entrance.
The duration of the visit is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes (30 minutes for the church; 45 minutes for the cave)
Independent visits to the cave are not permitted in order to preserve its heritage.
It is compulsory to wear closed shoes with non-slip soles or hiking boots
The temperature inside the cave is about 11 degrees
A sweatshirt or light jacket is recommended (even in summer)
In the event of bad weather, access to the nature trail is not always guaranteed and the visit may be limited to the church only
Animals are not allowed to enter the cave, as it is a consecrated place
During the week (Mon - Fri), the visit is confirmed with a minimum of 8 adult participants (full ticket)

Cancellation policy

Reservations can be cancelled free of charge within 24 hours of the day of the visit

More Information

Visits (with a paid ticket) are autonomous for the external area of the Grotto (belvedere) and for the Church. The "Grotta-Church of Antro" audio guide is a free application that can be downloaded onto your smartphone from Google Play or App Store and used for the visit. Guided tours are only in Italian, but foreign guests on the tour can use the audio guide in English, German and Slovenian. We recommend downloading the app before the visit in a place with good network coverage.
