The castle that gave birth to the poet Erasmus of Valvason and hosted Napoleon still stands intact in the province of Pordenone, just north of Casarsa della Delizia, in Valvasone Arzene, a charming medieval village whose atmosphere has also remained unchanged over the years. The splendid historic mansion dates back to the 1200s, but its Renaissance appearance is the result of a 16th-century makeover. Today it can be visited on open days, upon payment of an entrance fee, by anyone who wants to enjoy the fairy-tale atmosphere in its rooms.
Valvasone Castle still preserves intact and in excellent condition several late Gothic and Renaissance fresco cycles and two stuccoed rooms. Allegorical and iconographic themes also refer to the history of the mansion and the Valvason family.
Recently restored, the castle can be visited almost entirely on open days. Upon payment of a modest entrance fee, a guided tour lasting about an hour can be enjoyed.
The castle has the appearance of a majestic late 16th-century manor house, whose medieval elements have been replaced by Renaissance ones. The manor house can be visited almost entirely, both in the external areas, with the wall, bridge and moat, square with well and stables, and inside, where, exclusively by guided tour, the 3 floors can be explored.
Here are the Gothic Hall, or the former castle cellar, on whose vaults the date 1468 is inscribed, and the Cavana Hall. The latter was a shelter for boats, which were tied up via two rows of rings that are still visible and allowed the castle’s inhabitants to supply and move by river.
This central floor contains the Hall of Frescos, whose splendid and well-preserved pictorial friezes date from successive eras, from the late Gothic to the Renaissance, and a small theater dating from the 18th century.
Here you can visit the Kitchen Room with a large hearth and a small balcony from which you can admire the entire Castle Square. Also located there are the Castle Gallery, which houses the private chapel of the Valvasone family, the Noble Hall, with the original 1700s floor in seminato, and the Capricci Hall, so named for the six frescoes belonging to this painting current.
Visits to the castle can be made only with the accompaniment of a guide at scheduled times, lasts about an hour, and allows you to explore all areas open to the public of the manor house.
Guided tours follow these hours: Thursday 11:00 am; Friday 3:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday 09:30 am, 11:00 am, 3:00 pm, 4:30 pm. Reservations are recommended, but not required, except for groups. Tickets can be purchased at the IAT tourist office, which is located near the entrance at 14 Castello Square. The cost of the ticket is 6 euros and can only be purchased by cash payment.
Very evocative can be arranging a visit to the castle in conjunction with the “Medieval Valvasone” event, one of the best-known historical reenactments held in the village in early September, in which medieval-themed performances take place and in which you can sample period dishes.
