Nature Reserve Valle Canal Novo

The reserve a stone's throw from the center of Marano Lagunare

About this place

A few minutes’ walk from the historic center of Marano Lagunare is the Valle Canal Novo Regional Nature Reserve, small and well-maintained, and accessible to anyone who wants to indulge in nature for a couple of hours. The scenic route allows visitors to immerse themselves in the habitat of the many animal species, especially birds, and to observe wild geese, mallards, cormorants, and periodically even pink flamingos, without causing them any disturbance.

Why visit

01.

Easy to visit

The nature trail is simple and well-maintained, and allows undisturbed observation of animal species thanks to sighting points and observatories.

02.

365 days of wildlife

The reserve is open year-round from Tuesday to Sunday. Visiting is recommended in warm weather, but birdwatchers frequent the reserve year-round depending on the bird migration periods.

03.

A stone's throw from Marano

The entrance to the Reserve is a 5-minute walk from the Millennium Tower. To complete a nice trip to Marano, a visit to this natural oasis is a must.

The path in the reedbed

The “Caminada sull’Acqua,” or the path through the reedbed, consists of a long wooden walkway that passes just above the water level and leads to discover the area between the reeds. There are information boards along the trail about the marsh vegetation and local wildlife and benches on which to stop and fully enjoy the peace of the reserve.

Visit to the casone museum

A casone was built inside the oasis, a faithful reproduction of those that populate the Marano lagoon and that in the past housed Marano fishermen who stayed at sea for the night. The reconstruction also conforms to the interior and tells the story of the lives of those who lived there, thanks to the original furnishings, which at the time were used for daily and household use or were peculiar to fishing activity.

The lagoon aquarium

The river, sandbar, velma, channel, shallow water, coastal cordon and sea are the main environments that constitute the lagoon habitat. The aquarium at the Marano reserve was set up to represent these different habitats, and the tanks were divided according to their specific characteristics. A special feature is the seahorse tank, which can be observed as they swim suspended in the water in search of the small invertebrates on which they feed.

The "Caminada 3 points" and wildlife observatories

The route

The “Caminada 3 points” starts from the area of the refreshment-didactic casoni and first reaches the “verto de cane” area, a screened passage made of reed and wood, and then the Cason observatory. The trail allows visitors to observe how environments change depending on the salinity of the water, moving from freshwater to gradually more brackish areas. Along the way, the change in vegetation from reed thicket to rushes is evident.

The observers

Visitors, especially nature photography enthusiasts, can freely dispose of the two viewpoints: the Cason observatory, as the name implies, is a prime spot for observing waterfowl, including herons, swans, and ducks, the symbol of the reserve; the Panoramic Observatory is the most favorable spot at any time of day from which to take beautiful photographs thanks in part to the play of light and reflections on the water.

The prehistoric site

One area of the reserve has been dedicated to the reconstruction of a prehistoric site with the reproduction of a Bronze Age prototype house. The house is entirely built with mud, clay and wood, and the interior has been set up with objects of use from prehistoric times. The area has been prepared for educational purposes and is very interesting for younger people.
