Rifugio Flaiban Pacherini

Among the peaks of the Friulian dolomites

About this place

At 1,600 meters above sea level, perched on a green shelf among the jagged Dolomite peaks, is the Rifugio Flaiban-Pacherini.
The small building stands in an area of extraordinary wild beauty, where there is no trace of human intervention.
The Rifugio’s location is exceptional precisely because it is an ideal foothold for many hikes in the unspoiled nature of this and nearby valleys.
The Pacherini also has beds for overnight stays and is a stopover place on the Ring of the Friulian Dolomites.

Why visit it

01.

Suggestive trail

The trail develops for the first part in the forest.
The vegetation is very rich and diverse and accompanies the hiker to a long scree.
Here the panorama changes to the typically dolomitic one with the peaks on one side and the Forni Valley on the other.

02.

The Friulian Dolomites

The area is that of the Upper Suola Valley, with its characteristic Dolomite landscape, characterized by wide screes interspersed with dense larch and mountain pine forests.
It is a landscape that has not been anthropized and allows one to enjoy contact with wild nature.

03.

Small and isolated

One of the strengths of this Rifugio is its minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
The Rifugio, distant from population centers and reachable only on foot, is modest in size and fits into the wild landscape of the Suola Valley, integrating with it.

Services

Rifugio Flaiban-Pacherini offers a refreshment service with homemade dishes using traditional Carnic recipes.
It seats about 20 inside, in the room with the stove, but it is outside, on the panoramic terrace, that dining is ideal, thanks to the pristine environment and the unique view of the surrounding peaks.
The Rifugio has 14 beds divided into three rooms that sleep 4 and 6 in bunk beds.
Sheets are not provided and the use of a sheet bag is mandatory.

Opening season

Rifugio is open daily from June 18 to September 18.
Opening times are subject to change, so it is recommended to contact the lodge before going there.

The interior and the kitchen

The wood theme of the Pacherini’s structure is also reflected in the interior with exposed beams and furnishings of the same material both in the rooms and in the dining room, which is very simple, warmed by the warmth of a stove and furnished with tables and benches.
The cuisine also reflects the dictates of simplicity and authenticity.
All the dishes are typical Friulian and, among the dishes, there is always a soup, as per mountain tradition.
Definitely worth tasting is the crostone, melted cheese laid on speck and polenta, typical foods of Carnia.

Approach and trail

The trail begins in Forni di Sopra in the vicinity of Hotel Davost.
Forking the appropriately marked CAI 362 trail, we initially proceed on an asphalt road and then enter the forest.
Here the moderate but steady climb begins.
At an altitude of 1,000, the path becomes dirt and stony, turning into a scree on leaving the woods.
Shortly after, the Rifugio is visible.

The entire route does not present technical difficulties, and the gravel section is easy to walk with appropriate footwear, but because of its length and significant elevation gain, the ascent to the Rifugio Flaiban-Pacherini is suitable for trained people who are used to walking in the mountains.

Panoramas in the park of the Friulian Dolomites

The characteristic Dolomite landscape can be admired in the Val di Suola, where the Rifugio is located, and along the entire route to it.
From the first section, walking through the mountain pine forest, one already has glimpses of the peaks, while, on the way out, one can admire in their majesty the dolomite massifs: on one side, Mount Cimacuta and Pic di Mea; on the other, Pic di Mezzodì, Punta Dria and Cima di Suola; in front, Torrione Comici.
Reaching the shelf where the Rifugio is located, the view sweeps over dolomite spires, overhanging steeples and towers, forks, larch and mugo forests and high altitude meadows.
