Rifugio Chiadinas

On the slopes of Mount Crostis

About this place

Rifugio Chiadinas is loved by all for its excellent cuisine, the friendliness of its managers, and the dreamlike location in which it stands.
At almost 2,000 meters above sea level, it stands out on a green carpet among the peaks of the Carnic Alps.
An additional highlight of the Rifugio is the road to get there.
This is the “Panoramica delle Vette,” which, although it is steep and has many hairpin bends, is a very beautiful road, winding through the peaks, over the grassy meadows and through the woods, and from which there are extraordinary views.

Why visit

01.

Rooftop terrace

Rifugio Chiadinas stands on the sunny slope of Mount Crostis in the middle of a green grassy plateau.
From here the view is spectacular over the surrounding peaks and the entire Degano Valley.
On the panoramic terrace of the Rifugio it is possible to have lunch while enjoying the breathtaking view.

02.

The "Road to the Peaks"

The “Panoramica delle Vette” is a long, almost completely paved road that climbs from the village of Tualis to the Rifugio Chiadinas, continues at high altitude for about 7 km across the plateau and descends, passing through the woods, to Ravascletto.

03.

The ridge of Mount Crostis

The summit of Mount Crostis is easily reached from the Rifugio, which was erected on its southern slope.
With only a 45-minute walk you can admire the stunning 360-degree panorama of the Carnic Alps.

Services

Rifugio Chiadinas offers a refreshment service with homemade dishes using traditional recipes.
It seats about 60 inside, in the room with the stove, but it is outside, on the panoramic terrace, that dining is ideal, thanks to the lush setting and unique view.

Rifugio also offers overnight accommodations with 16 beds divided into 3 rooms.
Each room is for the exclusive use of the person/group that booked it and cannot be shared with other guests. Toilet facilities are shared. Beds are provided with sheets, and the Rifugio provides towels.

The Chiadinas’ managers often organize days dedicated to music, thanks to the involvement of artists and musical groups, combining it with outdoor life and good food.

Opening season

Rifugio Chiadinas is open daily from June 1 to October 10.
Opening times are subject to change, so it is recommended to contact the facility before going there.

The road leading to the Rifugio

The road to the Rifugio starts from Tualis, a hamlet of the town of Comeglians, and is the highest carriage road in Friuli Venezia Giulia, called the “Panoramica delle Vette.”
The first part of the overview corresponds to the long asphalt climb that, with several hairpin bends, leads to the Rifugio Chiadinas.

THE OVERVIEW OF THE PEAKS

The Vette road climbs to 1900 meters and continues at altitude for 7 km passing near Malga Crostis and Casera Tarondòn Alta.
Once past the latter, it begins a long hairpin descent that passes through the woods and arrives in the village of Ravascletto.
The road has a total length of 29 kilometers and has been almost entirely paved.
The unpaved sections correspond to scenic areas without hairpin bends.
Along the route there are some widenings where it is possible to pull over to enjoy the view.

The road runs along the side of the mountain and offers unique views to motorists, motorcyclists and cyclists.
Rifugio Chiadinas is a perfect stop for those who travel it.

Rifugio's interiors and rooms

The interior of the Chiadinas Rifugio has been renovated in the simple style befitting a rifugi.
The dominant theme is wood, both in the dining room and in the rooms.
The three rooms have 16 beds, mostly bunk beds.
The rooms are for exclusive use and those who book them do not share the room with anyone other than friends or relatives, while the bathrooms are for shared use.

Rifugio Chiadinas offers typical cuisine, responding to local Friulian and Carnic traditions.
The recipes, handed down through generations, are made with zero-kilometer foods and strictly home cooking.
You cannot fail to taste the bread gnocchi, frico or sausage served with polenta; not to be missed is the homemade grappa.

From the Rifugio to the summit of Mount Crostis

Those who visit the Rifugio Chiadinas cannot fail to take advantage of the opportunity to reach, in less than an hour’s walk, the summit of Mount Crostis and enjoy the view of the Carnic Alps, ranging east to the Julian Alps and west to the Dolomites.

ROUTE CHARACTERISTICS

The summit of Mount Crostis can be reached in about 45 minutes of ascent via CAI trail 151.
The trail is of easy/medium difficulty and first runs along narrow hairpin bends, then opens onto a vast prairie.
As you ascend these green pastures you are accompanied by the whistles of the numerous marmots, which are easy to spot.
The trail is 3.6 km long and has an elevation gain of 300 m.

Other trails

Several trails with different levels of difficulty start from the Rifugio Chiadinas.
Among the many, we recommend the less demanding CAI 154 “Anello Crostis” trail, which also leads to the Tarond and Crasulina lakes, and CAI 174, an expert trail that leads to the Rifugio Marinelli and Monte Coglians.
Nearby you can also see evidence of the Great War, some fortifications that were part of the “Vallo Alpino del Littorio.”

Getting there

Rifugio Chiadinas can be reached by car, motorcycle or bicycle from Tualis via the road called “Panoramica delle Vette”; on foot, from Tualis or Givigliana via CAI path 151 in about 3 h 30 min.
Alternatively, the Rifugio can also be reached on foot from Rifugio Marinelli, Collina, and Ravascletto.
