Forra del Cellina

Inside the nature reserve

About this place

In the Nature Reserve of which Lake Barcis is part flows the Cellina stream, which, over millions of years, has carved into the limestone creating the largest canyon in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Drive along the Old Valcellina Road and enter the gorge, flanking the stream and admiring it from above. Erosion pits, corrosion ponds and potholes of the giants, as well as breathtaking views, can be seen from this vantage point.

Why visit

01.

Open to the public

The Cellina Gorge is open to tourists of all ages, and to access it you only need to pay a 3 euro ticket, to which another 3 euro can be added if you want to cross the Tibetan bridge. The gorge helmet is provided at the entrance.

02.

Interesting and easy

The walk into the gorge is short, consisting only of about 4 km round trip, and easy. People of all ages can access it, and it can be traveled by foot, bicycle or tourist train. The route is paved, suitable for wheelchairs.

03.

The Tibetan Bridge

About halfway down the trail in the gorge, you can try your hand at crossing the Tibetan bridge. The road runs parallel to the bridge, consequently crossing it is not mandatory, but, wanting to cross it, the view from above is breathtaking.

The Old Valcellina Road

Through the Old Valcellina Road, it is possible to admire the gorge in all its grandeur. The road can be traveled on foot, by bicycle, or via the little train on which you can ride to enjoy the route in peace while listening to an audio guide.

The road is totally paved and secured, but the view is the stunning one overlooking deep ravines and gorges. The trail passes through tunnels carved into the rock and allows visitors to admire the multiple potholes of the giants, deep hemispherical depressions in the rock.

The entire route consists of 10 km, but only about 4 km can be traveled, round trip. The remainder will be secured from rockfall danger, and one day the canyon will be passable in its entirety.

The Tibetan Bridge

About halfway along the Valcellina Road you will encounter a 48-meter-long Tibetan bridge, made entirely of steel, that allows you to cross the gorge and enjoy the landscape below from a height of 20 meters. The experience of being suspended above the canyon is very exciting and accessible even to children 7 years old and up, but not to those who suffer from vertigo. To access the bridge, one must wear a helmet and harness and proceed by securing oneself to the catwalk with a hook. The route is completely safe and a small briefing is given for entry. The cost is 3 euros including all equipment.
