Among the eastern hills of Friuli, an area of excellence in Friuli Venezia Giulia, rich in vineyards and olive groves, stands solitary the Rose Monastery, so called the Abbey of Rosazzo. The fortified complex probably dates back to the 9th century and is renowned for its long history, the cultural events that take place there, and the wide variety of roses that adorn its perimeter and garden. The “Rose of Rosazzo,” a rose that blooms even in winter, discovered after the 1929 frost, is dedicated to the Rosazzo da Rosa event, which takes place over a weekend in May and includes a series of themed events dedicated to this flower.
The monastery stands among green vineyards in the silence of the countryside. Due to its location, it has always attracted many believers, attracted by the peace and spiritual atmosphere of this place.
The abbey has 1,200 years of history and has been ruled by different monastic orders. The elegant building exhibits the hallmarks of past eras, and by visiting it, one can retrace its steps.
From the abbey’s panoramic terrace, the view sweeps from Slovenia to the Gulf of Trieste and Aquileia, across mountains, hills and plains to the sea.
The beautiful cloister dates back to the 16th century; it consists of six columns and, between them, a small door, marked by a fresco depicting St. Peter the Apostle, leads to the church of the same name. On the cloister walls are frescoed lunettes with reproductions of the coats of arms of the commendatory abbots. The cloister also gives access to the Chapter House and the Hall of the Crucifixion, so called because of the fresco that decorates its lunette, and which formerly served as a refectory.
The heart of the abbey complex is the Church of St. Peter the Apostle, dating back to 1070. The building is Romanesque in style and has a three-nave floor plan. Inside are frescoes by Francesco India, known as the “Moor” or the “Torbid,” dating back to 1535. The paintings depict “The Calling of Peter and Andrew,” “The Transfiguration on Mount Tabor,” “The Miraculous Fishing on Lake Genezaret,” and “Madonna and Child.” The symbols of the four Evangelists are also depicted: the angel for Matthew, the lion for Mark, the ox for Luke, and the eagle for John, each inside a cloud.
According to legend, in the 9th century, a hermit named Alemanno, while wandering in search of a place of peace and spirituality, came to a hill in what is now Corno di Rosazzo and built a cell and a small oratory there. The structure grew over the years until it was consecrated as an abbey in 1090 and made autonomous under direct papal authority in 1245. Over the years the abbey was governed by Benedictines, commendatory abbots and Dominicans until 1823, when it was used as the summer residence of the archbishops of Udine. In 1994, the “Rosazzo Project” aimed at enhancing the spiritual and humanistic heritage of the abbey, which has become a cultural center and hosts, conferences, exhibitions and events, was initiated.
The hanging gardens of the abbey are adorned with rose gardens, some very old, which form the Rose Trail: from the Chapter House, you first exit onto the Belvedere, then descend via a staircase to a hanging garden. This second garden also features several varieties of roses, including Rosazzis, after which the abbey is named, which also bloom in winter. There are also striking allegorical statues in the garden, dating back to the 18th century and recently restored. Every year in May the garden hosts the “Rosazzo da Rosa” event, with events dedicated to roses and guided tours of the abbey.
