Malga Coot

In Resia, in the Julian Pre-Alps Park.

About this place

Starting from Resiutta and passing through the entire Resia Valley, one arrives at a special place nestled in the Julian Pre-Alps Nature Park. This is Malga Coot, lonely and surrounded by green woods and meadows. In few places can one find peace and tranquility as in this alpine hut that, from its privileged position, overlooks the pastures below, offering an exclusive panorama.

Why visit

01.

The woods and the view

Malga Coot stands in an extraordinary vantage point. A magnificent scenery of forests and green pastures opens from the terrace.

02.

Alpine products

Alpine pasture products can be enjoyed in the open air while admiring the mountain panorama or purchased to take home the aroma of the pastures.

03.

Curious cows

Coot alpine cows are young and very exuberant animals. They curiously observe the visitor and seek playful contact, even with some intrusive licking.

Landscape

Malga Coot lies in a green basin surrounded by the Canin and Plagne peaks, within the Julian Pre-Alps Natural Park.
Thanks to the recent renovation, it may not be apparent, but this is one of the oldest huts and farmsteads in the Resia Valley.
The landscape around the hut? Only woods and pastures, and a unique silence.

Itineraries and routes

Numerous scenic trails, more or less challenging, start from the hut, many of which are also suitable for children.

The best known are: theAnello di malga Coot, monte Guarda and Costantini bivouac, which runs along the Italian-Slovenian border; the CAI Manzano bivouac; the casera Canin; and Mt. Baba Grande.

For mountain bikers, we point out theAlta Val Resia Ring, which passes through Stolvizza, Glivaz, Coot malga, Coritis.

Services

Malga Coot offers food service with an agritourism where you can also taste the alpine products. The outdoor area with tables allows you to enjoy the beautiful view. For those about to make an excursion, the kitchen also prepares cold dishes and sandwiches.

The malga offers a direct sales service of its products. For overnight stay it has 6 beds in dormitory.

Opening period

Malga Coot is open daily during the mountain pasture period, roughly from June to September. The opening is constrained by weather conditions; therefore, the actual period could be longer or shorter.

0 KM ALPINE PRODUCTS

The kitchen and the farmhouse

Malga Coot’s typical Friulian dishes are homemade with 0-kilometer products and the dairy’s own work. All dishes are wholesome and taste of primary foods, flours, berries and field grasses. The dairy products, cheese, butter and cottage cheese, which can also be purchased in the commissary, taste like the meadows of this rich area.

Parking and route

From Stolvizza in Val Resia go up the forest road, indicated by signs, for about 8 km to the alpine hut. The road is steep, narrow and winding and is suitable for cars with high trim.

From the parking lot continue on foot for 15 to 20 minutes until you reach the hut. For those unable to walk there is the possibility, with the consent of the managers, to drive up to the hut.

Malga Coot can also be reached on foot from Coritis via CAI trail 731, which runs through the forest.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The hut parking lot is only a 15-minute walk away. For the elderly or those unable to walk, there is the possibility of parking at the hut, but only with the consent of the managers.

The typical Friulian dishes are all excellent. To get even more into the local reality, we recommend choosing crostini with cream of Val Resia garlic scapes as an appetizer.

Cows are not dangerous, but since they are young beasts, they are very exuberant and seek contact with humans.
