Piani del Cristo is a very quaint little restaurant-refuge with a porch where you can have lunch while enjoying the fresh air of the Sesis Valley. The refuge can be easily reached by car or via the simple and very impressive Piave Nature Trail. The walk through the forest anticipates the naturalistic setting of the lodge, surrounded by forests full of life and animals. The plateau on which it stands extends to the edge of the forest, heralded by a Crucifix, from which it takes its name.
The Piani del Cristo refuge is located in the naturalistic setting of the verdant Val Sesis, rich in botanical variety. For those who wish to get there on foot, the trail from Cima Sappada passes through a beautiful spruce forest.
The refuge is perfect for a refreshing stop, enhanced by a plate of cold cuts and sliced meats, or as the arrival point of the Piave Trail, to enjoy a good lunch carefully prepared by the manager.
The area is very rich in trails that connect places of great beauty, such as the Olbe lakes, or rich in history, such as the forts of the Great War, not to mention the Sesis Valley Nature Trail.
The Piani del Cristo hut is a delightful facility in the forested setting of the Sesis Valley.
The area is very rich in landscape, and several hikes can be made, starting with the Piave Val Sesis Nature Trail, the path through the forest that leads to the refuge from Cima Sappada. Other possible hikes include the Olbe lakes, the trail to the Rifugio Sorgenti del Piave, and the trail to the rifugio Calvi, which starts right here. In addition, you can reach Mount Chiadin, Peralba, Lastroni, or walk the interesting Route of the forts of the Great War.
The Piani del Cristo hut offers food service with 40 covers inside and another 20 outside. Very characteristic is the outside part of the kitchen facing the porch, from which you can watch the manager grilling meats and stirring polenta.
The hut also has some rooms for overnight stay, with a total of 8 beds.
Outside is a play area for younger children.
The refuge is open daily from about mid-May to early October, coinciding with the opening period of the road from Cima Sappada.
Simple and impressive, this nature trail leads from Cima Sappada to the refuge esplanade through a dense fir forest. The route is easy and pleasant, suitable even for young children, and involves a 45-minute walk with a low elevation gain of only 150 m. The trail follows the course of the Piave River and accompanies you to the Christ’s cross via ladders and small bridges to cross.
The Piani del Cristo refuge is located in Val Sesis and can be reached by car in 5 to 10 minutes from Cima Sappada via a paved road.
During winter the road is closed; it is passable approximately from mid-May to early October.
Parking is convenient and ample.
The refuge can also be reached on foot in 45 minutes from Cima Sappada.
