For those arriving there by land or sea, the appearance of the white stone castle is dazzling and surreal. The castle stands magnificently over the Gulf of Trieste, perfectly preserved and restored. At its foot, a parterre of perfect geometries leads to the 22-hectare park, the pride, as well as the Castle, of the city of Trieste and its inhabitants. Miramare Castle dates back to 1860, when Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg had it built as his residence. Today, the castle opens its doors daily to those who wish to visit it.
The interiors of Miramare Castle tangibly reflect its creator’s elegant style and love of beauty. Maximilian of Habsburg was a cultured and talented man, an aesthete fascinated by various styles and with numerous interests, as well as a great traveler. Just as with the botanical species in his garden, the Archduke brought back many works of art and an endless array of furnishings from his travels. All of this is perfectly preserved in the castle’s 22 rooms open to the public; the artifacts are original period pieces and are displayed in the various rooms, including the throne room.
The tour, which lasts about an hour, traces the history of Maximilian and his travels through the works he collected from around the world.
From the castle parterre, the sculpture of the Amazon on horseback welcomes visitors to the 22-hectare park created by Maximilian of Habsburg along with his mansion. The archduke wanted to create a park that, tracing the style of the castle, would be as grand as the European gardens of the time. The park is lush, filled with valuable botanical species, fountains and ponds. Along the avenues, many sculptures tracing classical marbles or famous period sculptures are discovered. In spring, the park bursts with colors and scents, and as you walk through it, you can still feel its creator’s love of nature, aesthetics and art.
The unit price of the ticket is €12. The cost includes admission to the temporary exhibition set up in the castle exhibition area. Every first Sunday of the month the visit is free. For an additional fee, guided tours or audio guides are available, as well as a shuttle to visit the castle grounds.
Admission to the park is always free.
