Rifugio Casera Tartoi is a beautiful, recently renovated facility in a magnificent panoramic position in the Friulian Dolomites. Management is family-oriented. Roberta, Sebastiano and Girolamo are passionate about welcoming visitors and offer home cooking. Everything is prepared by hand, from the main courses to the bread and desserts, some very special. Another highlight for spending a different day than usual is the possibility of reaching the hut by chairlift and then by a walk through the forest.
Casera Tartoi stands in an enchanting place, a basin between mountains on which forests alternate with meadows. And it is on the refuge’s large lawn that you can stop to relax in the midst of nature, surrounded by hundreds of butterflies.
The easiest and shortest way to reach this hut is to take the chairlift from Forni di Sopra to malga Varmost and walk for 45 minutes through a delightful little path in the middle of the forest.
This hut is located on the Forni di Sopra Alpine Pastures MTB Trail. Casera Tartoi thus becomes the perfect place for a quick lunch or a refreshing stop for all mountain bikers.
Rifugio Casera Tartoi stands in a magnificent sunny alpine basin between the slopes of Mt. Piova and Mt. Tiarfin. The refuge is framed by the typical reliefs of the Carnic Alps and the view is splendid of the Friulian Dolomites.
The landscape is bucolic, Casera Tartoi rests on a verdant meadow on which hundreds of butterflies hover.
This area is full of trails and paths of different lengths and degrees of difficulty that connect various huts or refuges, e.g., Casera Razzo in 3.30 hours, Lieutenant Fabbro Refuge (via Forcella Naiareit at 2120 m) in 3 hours, Casera Tragonia in 1 hour.
These connections also allow the construction of three special routes:
Rifugio Casera Tartoi offers food service with home cooking; it has 20 indoor seats, in an intimate setting with a lit fireplace, and 60 outdoor seats, on the panoramic terrace.
The shelter has 17 beds.
Rifugio Casera Tartoi is open daily from early June to early October. In January, February, March, April, October, November and December on weekends only. It should be noted that Casera Tartoi organizes the New Year’s Eve Dinner every year.

The hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on holidays and on all days in the weeks before and after mid-August.
During the summer season, it is possible to take a chairlift up to Varmost malga and then continue along CAI 211 trail. Casera Tartoi can be reached by a walk of about 45 minutes.
Follow the CAI 208 forest road, which climbs to the hut in about 2.30 hours with an elevation gain of about 800 m. The trail is also suitable for mountain biking, snowshoeing and ski touring.
The last chairlift ride is at 4:30 pm on weekdays, 5 pm on holidays. It is advisable to calculate the travel time from the hut to the chairlift starting point well, because the walk back to the valley is long and tiring. In addition, it is necessary to check that the chairlift is in operation, as the opening days vary every year.
