Rifugio Chiampizzulon

The shelter in the forest

About this place

In the midst of a dense fir forest, in a small clearing less than an hour’s walk from the Piani di Vas in Rigolato, is the Chiampizzulon refuge. The hut is a destination for many walkers and cyclists who follow the path through the forest and then find themselves in this cool clearing. Many trails of easy, medium or difficult level start from here, among which, several are also suitable for mountain biking. Well known is the loop, with passage to Chiampizzulon, for Mount Talm, from the top of which you can enjoy the spectacle of 4 valleys, the Degano Valley, the Ravascletto Valley, the Calda Valley and the Pesarina Valley.

Why visit it

Nestled in the woods

The hut is located on a scenic shelf amidst a forest of fir, beech and larch trees. It is reached through a forest path, which, at the end, opens up to this silent clearing, whose sounds are only the muffled sounds of the forest and its inhabitants.

Walking or cycling

The path to Chiampizzulon hut winds through the forest and is practicable even by children as it is simple and safe. For the same reason, it is also very impressive to get to the hut by e-bike, renting it nearby.

Chiampizzulon refuge is the starting point for many hikes, easy or more challenging, and climbs. The surrounding dirt roads are ideal for mtb routes, and for climbing enthusiasts, the Pleros mountain wall is about 20 minutes away.

From a naturalistic and landscape point of view, the Piani di Vas area is one of the most beautiful in Carnia. The land is almost completely covered with forest, and grassland areas are dotted with stavoli. The forests are alive and populated, and it is not uncommon to encounter deer. From the magnificent green balcony on which the refuge was built, the view is breathtaking, the dense forests are surrounded by the mountainous backdrop of the Coglians, Peralba and Chiadenis.

The approach

Several routes can be taken to reach the refuge from the Piani di Vas, and among them, the one that is certainly the most fascinating and suggestive is the panoramic trail. The trail runs deep into the forest and passes casera Campiut to arrive at a scenic lookout at 1700 m, where you can stop at a table and benches to rest and admire the view. From here we descend to 1630 m back to the hut.
