About this place
In the midst of a dense fir forest, in a small clearing less than an hour’s walk from the Piani di Vas in Rigolato, is the Chiampizzulon refuge. The hut is a destination for many walkers and cyclists who follow the path through the forest and then find themselves in this cool clearing. Many trails of easy, medium or difficult level start from here, among which, several are also suitable for mountain biking. Well known is the loop, with passage to Chiampizzulon, for Mount Talm, from the top of which you can enjoy the spectacle of 4 valleys, the Degano Valley, the Ravascletto Valley, the Calda Valley and the Pesarina Valley.

Nestled in the woods
The hut is located on a scenic shelf amidst a forest of fir, beech and larch trees. It is reached through a forest path, which, at the end, opens up to this silent clearing, whose sounds are only the muffled sounds of the forest and its inhabitants.

Walking or cycling
The path to Chiampizzulon hut winds through the forest and is practicable even by children as it is simple and safe. For the same reason, it is also very impressive to get to the hut by e-bike, renting it nearby.

Excursions
Chiampizzulon refuge is the starting point for many hikes, easy or more challenging, and climbs. The surrounding dirt roads are ideal for mtb routes, and for climbing enthusiasts, the Pleros mountain wall is about 20 minutes away.

Landscape
From a naturalistic and landscape point of view, the Piani di Vas area is one of the most beautiful in Carnia. The land is almost completely covered with forest, and grassland areas are dotted with stavoli. The forests are alive and populated, and it is not uncommon to encounter deer. From the magnificent green balcony on which the refuge was built, the view is breathtaking, the dense forests are surrounded by the mountainous backdrop of the Coglians, Peralba and Chiadenis.

Chiampizzulon Refuge enjoys a prime location for hiking and biking enthusiasts. Among the best known are these destinations:
- Piani di Vas loop to Mount Talm with passage to Chiampizzulon refuge
- Malga Tuglia
- Entralais Pass from Val Pesarina
- Siera Rifugio
- Mount Tuglia Ferrata
- Mount Pleros
- Traverse to the Fratelli de Gasperi refuge.
In addition, sport climbing can be practiced on a wall of Mt. Pleros. The Chiampizzulon hut area and the path to get there are also suitable for snowshoers.
Services
The Chiampizzulon refuge has of 5 rooms plus an overnight dormitory, for a total of 48 beds. The restaurant seats 40 inside, in addition to the large outdoor terrace.
Opening period
It can be visited daily from June 15 to September 30. From early May until mid-June and during October it is open only on weekends. Opening hours are variable and at certain times it is possible to dine by reservation only, so you should contact the lodge in advance for specifics.
The approach
Several routes can be taken to reach the refuge from the Piani di Vas, and among them, the one that is certainly the most fascinating and suggestive is the panoramic trail. This trail, marker 227 and then 228, is longer than the others and has a greater elevation gain, but allows you to enjoy a more complete experience. The trail runs deep into the forest and passes casera Campiut to arrive at a scenic lookout at 1700 m, where you can stop at a table and benches to rest and admire the view. From here we descend to 1630 m back to the hut.


CAI parking lot and trailhead
Take state road 355 from Tolmezzo to Sappada. In Rigolato, turn toward the hamlet of Ludaria and follow the signs for Piani di Vas (1350 m). Park in the large clearing on the left.
At this point, take trail 228a, which leads to the hut in 45 minutes, or 228, which can be walked in 1 hour. Alternatively, you can take the scenic trail at the junction not far from the parking lot, following first trail marker 227 and then 228. The route takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
The hut can also be reached from Forni Avoltri in about 2 hours by forking trail 229 through Malga Tuglia and then trail 227; from Cima Sappada, again via Malga Tuglia, via trails 320, 230 and 227 in about 2.30 hours; from Val Pesarina in 2 hours by taking trails 226 and 228.

The lodge is open from May to October, but before going there, it is best to contact the managers by phone since in the early and late season it is usually only open on weekends. In addition, the opening varies according to weather conditions.

The lodge is especially suitable for families and children. Younger children will experience the thrill of discovering the forest by walking the easy trail that leads to the hut in 45 min.
